About our training yacht , SSM and LLO -

What is SSM?

The vessel is under the New Zealand Safeship Management System(SSM) with SGS (a surveying company in chch).  SSM is like a mega WOF done on the yacht every 12 months, she is then re-classified as a commercial passenger vessel and given a certificate and MNZ No. , this is the only way to legally operate a vessel for what Maritine New Zealand call 'for hire or reward' Her operating waters are for 6 passengers from the Waimakariri, Lyttelton to Akaroa. Each year the vessel is hauled out and inspected from head to toe or Bow to Stern, Its similar to CAT1  except we don't need a life raft. When we brought the vessel 5 years ago we spent a lot of time and money bringing her up to this specification. Here are some of the tasks we has to acomplish for this. Its a long list, and remember its a DONE list not a to do list!!!! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS KEEP UP THE MAINTENANCE AS DESCRIBED IN THE SSM MANUAL SUPPLIED!

Vessels in SSM generally are worth about $10,000 more

  • Phew, that took a while to install and about $8-$10k poorer too!

What is an LLO?

The basic skipper’s ticket is the Local Launch Operator’s qualification. Anyone who can prove that they have six months sea service, gained within the last 10 years, can apply for this qualification.*** See our notes below

Skippers who achieve their Local Launch Operator’s certificate, are endorsed with up to six vessels and/or areas, and holders are limited to these.

Pleasure vessels will not be endorsed on an Local Launch Operator’s certificate.

Sea service can be recreational or commercial, or a mixture of both. Recreational time is counted as a quarter of commercial sea time. A rough calculation guide is:

6 months commercial time = 750 hours sea service ***See note
6 months recreational time = 3,000 hours sea service *** See note

People who want to apply for this qualification must complete and submit a number of documents and forms as well as comply with the qualification’s requirements.

***Note from the sailing school.. We can help you gain commercial time on 'Good Point' any time spent on this vessel or any vessel in survey is classed as commercial time even if you were just gutting fish!, note not all 750 hours of time are required too. Recreational time is also counted as a max of 8 hours a day if you live on board any vessel, holidays on trailer yachts, run abouts can count too!
