Lesson 3 Anchoring, Jetties & Mooring

One of the most stressful tasks to a student sailor is berthing the yacht in a marina, common concerns are:

  • Will I hit another vessel?
  • How can I turn quickly?
  • My boat reverses poorly, how can I get out?
  • People are watching me, I am more likely to make a mistake
  • The wind is strong and blowing me against other vessels
  • I cant find my birth / visitors birth
  • Going to the re-fueling jetty when it is busy
  • Did I make that last boat insurance payment? !!
  • If speed is my enemy then how do I maintain steerage?
Getting a 45ft yacht out of a tight marina finger with windage is difficult for all owners not just beginners, unless practised regularly with crew it can all go horribly wrong.

  1. learn how much momentum your yacht has, follow this practical excersize
